Desirie Sykes — Founder of NESS Behavior Consulting and NESS Cares
With over a decade of hands-on experience in developmental disability services, I’ve dedicated my career to advocating for children with special needs. My personal journey began when my own child faced challenges and the lack of adequate services within the educational system.
Pioneering NESS Behavior Consulting
My pursuit led to the establishment of NESS Behavior Consulting, centered on providing specialized care for children with developmental disabilities. Witnessing the transformative impact of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), I became passionate about bridging the gap between families and educational institutions. NESS Cares — Addressing Unmet Needs in Mental Health and Special Education
In response to unmet needs, NESS Cares emerged as a not-for-profit 501c(3) organization dedicated to serving parents, educators, professionals, and caregivers of individuals with mental illness and special education needs. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the challenges faced by students with special needs during the shift to virtual learning.
The pandemic heightened existing barriers for individuals with learning disabilities, including limited access to comprehensive treatment due to financial constraints and insurance gaps. NESS Cares responded proactively by initiating the Sensory Box Initiative program, providing essential resources to bolster the mental and behavioral health of our community.
Additionally, NESS Cares provides a platform for me to share my personal struggle within mental health systems. As a therapist who sought therapeutic support after experiencing a personal crisis in 2018, I witnessed the system’s limitations designed to aid individuals. This pivotal experience expanded my vision beyond autism, motivating me to advocate for mental health awareness and comprehensive support.
This realization fueled my determination to reach a broader audience, advocating for mental health and special education, establishing a platform that genuinely cares — NESS Cares. You can read more about this in my self published book “Who Do you Think You Are?” available for purchase on Amazon.
